II. - Avatar? Theme?

Avatars:
An avatar is an image that is posted above your name when you post a message
on a message board that supports avatars. On Neopets.com, it is an image that
is above your username when you post a message on the neoboards.
On Neopets.com, there are several 'secret' avatars that you can collect.
These are gotten by getting certain scores in certain games, collecting the
right items, visiting the right places, winning contests and other such
things.
Themes:
Themes are special skins that take the place of the normal header and footer
bars. These themes will sometimes have special effects on different aspects
of the site. They also make the site a bit more enjoyable if you happen to
not like the default yellow layout that has been there for many a year.
The point of this file is to list all avatars and themes in one place with
relevant methods, theories and links.

Please note that if you want up the minute updates on avatars, you're best bet
is to visit the AvatarLog (http://avatar.starried.net/index.php). The main
purpose behind this guide is to curb the flow of misinformation that has
been flowing into GFAQs Neopets community since avatars inception.

IV.1. - The way of the Avatars
==============================================================================
I see a fair amount of 'Help Me Get This Avatar' topics on the boards (and
I don't just mean the GameFAQ boards). That"s the main reason this file
exists, to help those who are having problems. But, no matter HOW in-depth I
make this guide, someone, somewhere, is still going have a problem. But
that"s not really a bad thing. If the avatars were easy to get, it wouldn't
be any fun. Hell, even I have problems with avatars. So here, in this
section, I give you a list of general tips for obtaining avatars. If nothing
else, this FAQ serves as encouragement to those budding (as well as seasoned)
avatar collectors out there.
- Beginning avatar collectors might want to seek out the Browsing avatars
first, as they are the easiest to get. It shouldn't be to difficult,
unless you're new to Neopets. And if that's the case, worry not, each
Browsing avatar comes with a handy, dandy link.
Game avatars keeping you down?
- Try asking on the Games Chat Neoboard or in Neopets - General on
gamefaqs.com.
- Take a look at Ringworm's very well written Games FAQ, which can be found
here:

- Check the game guides on pinkpt.com.
Not enough $$$ for avatar items?
- If you're new to Neopets (or even if you're not), try looking up neopoint
making tips on the Neoboards.
- Better yet, checkout PinkPT.com. They have a large section on money-making.
- Shop around. Some items are cheaper than you think.
- Play a lot of games. Do some research, some games give more of a pay off
than other. Find a game you're good at and stick with it!
- Ask around. Someone might be willing to lone you the items you need
(but don't spam/begg!).
Can"t beat anyone in the battledome?
- Look up training guides on pinkpt.com.
- Take a look at blackmage 200"s very well written Battledome Guide, which
can be found here:

- Try looking at the IDB battledome site, which can be found here:

That blasted Random Event not random enough?
- Try refreshing a few times or poke around the site a bit (just don"t get
out of control with the refreshing).
- Try taking a break and coming back later. These things are basically a
matter of luck. Maybe your luck will be better later. ^_^
If you keep at it, you will eventually obtain the avatars you want. Probably
the most important thing to remember is to have fun while avatar collecting.
It's only worth it if you're having fun~

IV.2. - How to use Avatars
==============================================================================
1. Click on 'Boards' on the headbar (5th selection from the left).
2. Click on 'Preferences'.
3. You will see a box that says 'Avatar'. The pic on the left is the avatar
you're using right now. Click on the scroll menu and scroll up and down
the avatar list. When you click on an avatar, a preview pic will show up
on the right.
4. Once you have selected the avatar you want to use, scroll to the bottom
of the page and click 'Submit'.
Oh, and, in case you're curious as to how many avatars you have, you can find
it under 'Secret Avatars' in the collection box on the right side of your
user lookup.

browser, because Grarrl Keno works slightly differently in Firefox than it
does in Internet Explorer or other browsers. So if you use Firefox and you

I know this because I matched four numbers about 10 or 15 times using
Firefox and never got the avatar, and someone on Neopets told me to switch
to IE, and the first time I matched four, I got the avatar.

Q: I went to this link,

A: You can't get any avatars from that link. That"s the link the neopets
image server uses to link the random event of getting an avatar to whatever
page you're on. Changing the number at the end WILL show you other avatars,
but it WON'T give them to you.
NOTE: This no longer works. It was causing a lot of rumors to be spread,
so TNT disabled the viewing of these images.
Q: Hey, there is an avatar link to some avatar that I've never seen
before/can't seem to get/find/name/etc. Why?
A: Not released yet. Its already been uploaded to the image server, but not
active yet.
Q: How dare you steal information from my site/webpage/blog/kidney?! Neopets
will have your ass!!
A: Firstly, 'I' didn't steal information from anywhere. A good 89% of the info
found in this guide came from other people answering my requests for info.
I did compare info that I got to that found on other parts of the web, but
any page I used information from has been credited. If you didn't what the
info used, why put it on the web?
Next, Neopets will not 'have my ass'. Legally, GameFAQs.com can't post
anything Neopets related without permission from Neopets Inc. themselves.
The fact that a Neopets section of GameFAQs exists is proof enough that
permission was granted, or at least that TNT doesn't care (which is more
likely, to be honest).
Note: Before you all start sending me e-mails about the validity of my
claims, shut up. I've seen TNT have sites shut down for having
less than GameFAQs does on the same grounds.
Q: I seen some avatars on the Cheats & Secrets page on GameFAQs, but I can't
seem to get them and they aren't in your faq. Why?
A: *sigh* The stuff on the Secrets page is the result of the poster not
checking to make sure what he/she is posting is factual information. The
avatars listed there DO exist, but they are NOT released. The method
listed to obtain them is made up. Now that I think about it, I should
fill out a problem report about it....
Update: In case anyone wanted to know, a little of the lies have been
removed.
Update: This question was added way back in the guides first versions.
Since then, much of the information has been removed and no
more avatar related secrets are being accepted (largely due
to this guide existing).
Q: How do I get the Sulking Kadoatie avatar? It's on the cheats page.....
A: *sigh again* You can't. YET. I've gotten a lot of e-mails about this. Let
me clear it up. When the link to the image server was first found, a
neopets related website (I have been told that it was flamingskeith.com)
hunted down all the avatars. There were two problems with this:
1. Some of the avatars they found were not avatars at all, they were
buddy icons for AIM.
2. They made up a lot of false information on how to get these avatars that
may or may not exist. What has happened, is gamefaqs users have uploaded
this information to the cheats section as factual information.
So there you are.
Note: Just to clear things up right now, Sulking Kadoatie is an avatar,
it just hasen't been released. Seeing as there is an AIM icon just
like it, I figure TNT changed their minds about it but left it on the
server.
Q: I visited one of the links under the browsing avatar section, but didn't
get the avatar. Why?
A: You may have already had the avatar. Check to make sure. There have been
cases were a person received an avatar, but didn't get a random event
telling them so. Then again, there is also the possibility that the link I
have listed is incorrect/broken. I try to make sure that all links are
working, but if you find a link that is, please e-mail me about it.
Q: Can I get petpet type avatars from petpets of special/limited colors?
A: I saw this on the message boards at GameFAQs. I've been poking around for
information and there is very little.

Yes, you can.
For those of you who don't understand what I'm talking about: Some
petpets are special. They come in only one color and can't be painted.
Ever. This was implemented by TNT to keep people from manipulating the
price of rare petpets. Here is an example: On the Event Calendar (2003),
we got a White Ona. This Ona CAN'T be painted any other color. By the
same token, no other Ona (ie: a normal, yellow Ona, etc.) can be
painted white. Understand? The problem is, we don't know if petpet
specific avatars can be gotten from the special versions of the same

And for the record, yes, a Red Slorg will work fine.
Q: I don't understand what you mean by "This was implemented by TNT to keep
people from manipulating the price of rare petpets." Could you explain it
better?
A: White Ona are worth (at the time of this writing) around 6K in neopoints.
Normal Ona (at time of this writing) are just about Unbuyable. Without
the TNT putting a block on painting the White Ona, a lot of people would
come into contact with an unbuyable item. How? Without the painting
block, a person could buy a White Ona for 6K, paint it blue (which
would make it a normal Ona) and POOF! They have an unbuyable item. To
keep this from happening, TNT makes some painted petpets special and
unpaintable.
Q: TNT?
A: Abbreviation of TheNeopetsTeam.
Q: Why did you remove the image server links from each avatar/why don't the
image server links show me that avatar?
A: TNT disabled the links. Those links didn't just show you the avatar, it
showed you the little random event box that pops up when you get an
avatar. It was causing a lot of problems, so they are no longer visible.
Q: What kind of problems?
A: People saw the random event and thought they had a new avatar. Some people
were linking the random event pic to their shop to make it look like you
had a new avatar when you visited.
There is still a way to make links like these. From what I've seen, TNT
has no problem with them as long as it's made evident that you're posting
a joke.
Q: Isn't there a link to each image on the message board image server?
A: Yes.
Q: How do I get a link to an avatar from the message board.
A: Right click on the avatar, scroll down to 'properties', click on it and
copy the link.
I seem to have forgotten to add something important here. This trick
won't work in all browsers (such as SBC Yahoo! and some versions of
Netscape). It will ALWAYS work in ANY version of Internet Explorer and
MOST versions of FireFox.
Also note that viewing an avatar via these links will NOT give you
the avatar, just let you see it.
Q: I can't seem to see any of the recent additions to the FAQ. It only shows
version from [ENTER DATE]. What"s going on?
A: Try clearing out your Cookies/Files/History.
Q: How do I clear out my Cookies/Files/History?
A: In Internet Explorer: Tools > Internet Options > General tab >
Temporary Internet Files section > click on Delete Cookies/Delete Files >
under Temporary Internet Files section is History section > click the
Clear History button.
In FireFox: Tool > Options > History/Cookies/Cache Clear.
Q: What do I do after I clear out my Cookies/Files/History?
A: Restart your browser. Problem should be solved.
Q: What"s the deal with pinkpt.com?
A: I took them out of the guide because they had been shut down by TNT
due to spyware. Now they are back, so I put them back into the guide.
Q: Why all the links? Most of those places are easy enough to find.
A: New users won"t be as familiar with the site as more experienced users.
Besides, even experienced users might like to have the link right in
front of them.
Q: Is there an easier way to go to all these pages?
A: Not really. Although, if you don't like copy and pasting links, try
downloading the FireFox browser and the Linkification Extension.
Q: Isn't the 'heart' in *I 'heart' Happiness* supposed to be a character
shaped like a heart?
A: Yes, but that's a UNICODE character and most websites won't host text
documents in UNICODE.
Q: Is it possible to get every avatar ever released?
A: Nope. Some of these avatars are retired. Sometimes several avatars will
be released for one event, with only one obtainable per person. This is
all beside the fact that one avatar is for TNT staff only.
Q: What about the avatars that were shown in The Guildmasters' Dinner?
A: They are: Baby Kiko, Beast Burger, Fire Peophin, Battle Duck, Scarab 21
and Scout Unit. They were supposed to be prizes (supposedly) for solving
the puzzle. The Guildmasters' Dinner was stopped, so, at the moment,
there is no way to get them.
Q: What is the easiest way to tell the difference between avatars and buddy
icons?
A: Take a look at the URL of the image. An avatar will have the words
‘neoboards" and ‘avatars" in it. Buddy icons will have the word ‘buddy"
in it.
Q: NST?
A: Neopian Standard Time (same as Pacific Standard Time).

Q: Will the themes work in any browser?
A: I see this question pop up a lot. Apparently, some browsers can"t display
themes correctly. FireFox can"t load anymore than the main page without
crashing.
NOTE: FireFox doesn"t seem to have any problems with the default theme.
EDIT: It seems that this problem no longer exists (for the most part). It was
a coding error on part of TNT and it seems to be fixed. Although, the
site does run a bit slower on FireFox when using anything but default.
Q: Other than changing the appearance of the header and footer, do these
themes do anything else?
A: Some of them increase the likelihood of random events taking place on
certain pages, others limit/grant access to certain parts of the site, etc.
Elaborating a bit, each theme is rumored to have a special power. We know
of a few (mostly because TNT told us of these powers), but its unclear if
ALL themes have the magic.
Q: What the hell are these odd pics that link to random places in the upper
left?
A: Notices of various events (Neomail, Trading Post, etc.). Each theme has
it's own set of icons to represent these events.
